Butters & Waxes in Skincare: A Guide to Building Texture, Structure & Balance
Some of the most important ingredients in a skincare formula are not the ones making the biggest claims.

Behind each of those textures is a carefully chosen balance of butters, waxes, and oils.
For natural formulators, learning how to work with butters and waxes is one of the simplest ways to begin understanding formulation itself. They don't simply make a product thicker. They influence how it melts, spreads, absorbs, protects, and ultimately feels on the skin.
Understanding their differences makes it much easier to choose the right ingredient for the formula you're trying to create.
What Are Cosmetic Butters?
Plant butters are fats extracted from the seeds, kernels, or fruits of plants. Unlike most carrier oils, which remain liquid at room temperature, butters contain a higher proportion of fatty components that give them a soft-to-solid consistency.
But not every butter behaves the same way.
Some are creamy and immediately melt into the skin.
Others are firm and almost brittle.
Some leave behind a rich protective layer, while others absorb surprisingly quickly.
This means that choosing a butter isn't simply a matter of deciding which botanical sounds appealing. Its physical characteristics can significantly change the finished formula.
What Butters Do in a Formula
Butters are often chosen for their nourishing fatty-acid profiles, but their role goes beyond conditioning the skin.
Depending on the butter, they can help:
- increase richness and body

Soft Butters vs. Firm Butters
One useful way to begin choosing butters is to think about their natural consistency.
Softer Butters
Softer butters tend to melt readily and contribute creaminess and glide.
Examples include Shea Butter Nilotica and some softer varieties of Mafura Butter.
They can be especially useful when you want a formula that feels rich and easy to spread.
Medium-Firm Butters
Butters such as shea, mango, cocoa, cupuaçu, and murumuru can provide more body while still melting comfortably against the skin.
These are versatile choices for body butters, balms, creams, and conditioning products.
Harder Butters
Ingredients such as kokum, tucuma, and kpangnan can provide considerably more structure.
They are useful when a formula needs firmness without relying entirely on wax.
The exact hardness and melting behavior of a natural butter can vary somewhat from batch to batch, but learning these general differences makes formulation much more intuitive.
What Are Cosmetic Waxes?
Waxes serve a different purpose.
While butters primarily contribute emollience, richness, and body, waxes are especially valuable for structure.
They can transform a blend of liquid oils and soft butters into something that holds its shape.
Think of:
- lip balms
- salves
- lotion bars
- solid perfumes
- protective balms
- sticks
Without enough structural material, many of these formulas would simply remain soft oils or semi-liquid blends.
What Waxes Do in a Formula
Waxes can help:

- influence glide and payoff
- help solid products maintain their shape
The amount of wax matters just as much as the type.
Too little, and a balm may become too soft.
Too much, and it can become hard, waxy, or difficult to spread.

Beeswax, Candelilla & Carnauba: What's the Difference?
Three of the most familiar natural cosmetic waxes are beeswax, candelilla wax, and carnauba wax.
Although they can serve similar purposes, they don't behave identically.
Beeswax
Beeswax is a classic choice for balms and salves.
It provides structure while contributing a protective, occlusive quality to the finished product. Yellow beeswax retains its characteristic natural color and aroma, while white beeswax offers a more neutral appearance for formulations where color matters.
Candelilla Wax
Candelilla is a plant-derived wax commonly used when a vegan alternative to beeswax is desired.
It is generally harder than beeswax, so direct one-to-one substitutions can noticeably change a formula's texture.
It can provide firmness while still allowing good glide when properly balanced with oils and butters.
Carnauba Wax
Carnauba is an especially hard plant wax with a relatively high melting point.
A small amount can add considerable structure, making it useful in sticks and other products that need to remain firm.
Because of its hardness, it is typically used more sparingly than softer waxes.
Butter or Wax?
This is one of the easiest distinctions for a beginning formulator to learn.
If you want to make a formula richer, creamier, or more emollient, think butter.
If you want to make it firmer, more structured, or more resistant to melting, think wax.
Often, the best formulas use both.
Imagine a simple balm made from a carrier oil, botanical butter, and wax.
The oil provides slip and spreadability.
The butter adds richness and body.
The wax gives the balm structure.
Change the ratio of those three components and you can create an entirely different product without changing the basic formulation concept.
That's one of the most useful lessons in natural formulation.
Choosing a Butter for Your Formula
Instead of choosing a butter based solely on its skincare benefits, ask what you want it to contribute to the finished product.
Do you want something soft and creamy?
Something firm but fast-melting?
Something deeply protective?
Something that helps reduce the oily feel of a balm?
Something that will remain more solid in warmer temperatures?
For example, cocoa butter and kokum butter can bring considerably more firmness than a very soft shea butter. Cupuaçu can contribute a creamy, conditioned feel. Mango butter can create body while maintaining a relatively smooth skin feel.
There isn't necessarily a single "best" butter.
There is simply the butter that makes sense for the formula you're building.
Choosing a Wax
The same principle applies to wax.
Ask what the finished product needs to do.
For a soft salve, you may only need enough wax to prevent the oils from remaining liquid.
For a lip balm, you may want greater firmness and staying power.
For a solid stick, considerably more structure may be necessary.
The wax you choose—and how much you use—becomes part of the architecture of the formula.
Butters & Waxes in Emulsions
Butters are not limited to anhydrous products.
They can also be incorporated into the oil phase of lotions and creams, where they contribute richness, emollience, and texture.
Waxes can sometimes be used in emulsified formulations for texture and structure as well, but it is important to understand one distinction:
A wax is not automatically an emulsifier.
Beeswax, for example, should not be relied upon by itself to create a stable oil-and-water emulsion.
True emulsifying ingredients—such as emulsifying waxes and emulsifiers designed specifically for that purpose—perform a different function by helping oil and water remain dispersed together.
This distinction becomes increasingly important as you move from simple balms and oils into more advanced formulation.
A Note About Temperature
Butters and waxes are generally melted before being incorporated into an anhydrous formula.
But excessive or prolonged heat isn't necessary.
A useful approach is to melt the highest-melting ingredients first and add softer ingredients as needed, using only enough heat to fully combine the formula.
Cooling matters, too.
Some botanical butters can develop a grainy texture when they melt and then cool slowly or experience repeated temperature fluctuations. Shea butter is particularly well known for this behavior.
Understanding heating and cooling is therefore part of understanding your ingredients.
Simple Ingredients, Endless Possibilities
One of the most interesting things about butters and waxes is how much can be created from so little.
A few foundational ingredients can become:
- a soft facial balm
- a protective hand salve
- a firm lotion bar
- a conditioning body butter
- a lip balm
- a cleansing balm
- a solid perfume
The difference may come down to nothing more than the ingredients chosen and the ratios between them.
And that is where formulation begins to become less about following recipes and more about understanding why a formula works.
A Foundation Worth Understanding
Butters and waxes may not be the most glamorous ingredients in a formulation.
They don't need to be.
They are foundational ingredients—the ones quietly determining whether a balm melts beautifully, whether a stick holds together, whether a cream feels rich or light, and whether a formula has the texture you imagined when you began.
Learning to formulate with them is ultimately about learning balance:
softness and structure
glide and staying power
richness and absorption
