Essential Oils in Skincare: A Formulator’s Guide to Safe & Intentional Use

Few ingredients demonstrate the concentration of plants quite like essential oils.

A handful of lavender flowers and a bottle of lavender essential oil may come from the same plant, but they are not the same ingredient.

Essential oils are highly concentrated mixtures of volatile aromatic compounds obtained from botanical material. Their aroma can be powerful even in very small amounts—which is one of the first clues that they should be formulated differently from carrier oils, infused oils, and whole botanicals.

A drop or two can completely change the character of a formula.

And that's exactly why essential oils deserve to be used thoughtfully.

Understanding dilution, dermal limits, oxidation, phototoxicity, processing, and the individual chemistry of an essential oil allows you to move beyond simply adding drops for fragrance and begin using these ingredients with intention.

What Is an Essential Oil?

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic materials obtained from different parts of plants, including:

  • flowers
  • leaves
  • peels
  • bark
  • roots
  • wood
  • resins
  • seeds

Depending on the botanical, essential oils may be obtained through methods such as steam distillation or expression, particularly in the case of some citrus peel oils.

The resulting oil contains volatile compounds responsible for much of the plant's characteristic aroma.

Lavender smells like lavender.

Peppermint contains its familiar cooling aromatic profile.

Frankincense carries its distinctive resinous character.

But because those compounds are concentrated, essential oils require a different approach than the plant material from which they originated.

Essential Oils Are Not Carrier Oils

The word oil can make this distinction confusing for beginning formulators.

Essential oils and carrier oils are very different materials.

Carrier oils such as jojoba, sunflower, sweet almond, and rosehip are lipid-based ingredients used for emollience, conditioning, and as the foundation of many oil-based formulations.

Essential oils are concentrated volatile aromatic substances.

Carrier oils can often make up most—or even all—of an anhydrous skincare formula.

Essential oils generally cannot.

Instead, they are incorporated at much lower concentrations.

This is also where the term carrier oil comes from: these oils can act as the base that "carries" a much smaller amount of essential oil across the skin.

Essential Oils Aren't the Same as Fragrance Oils

Essential oils and fragrance oils can both provide aroma, but they aren't interchangeable terms.

Essential oils are obtained from botanical sources.

Fragrance oils are aromatic compositions created specifically for fragrance applications and may contain synthetic aromatic materials, naturally derived components, or combinations of materials depending on the product.

Neither category should automatically be considered safer simply because of its origin.

Safety depends on the specific material, concentration, application, and exposure.

For the formulator, the important question isn't simply whether something is natural.

It's whether it is appropriate for the formula you're creating.

Why Dilution Matters

One of the most important principles when working with essential oils is simple:

More isn't better.

Essential oils are concentrated, and applying them undiluted to the skin can increase the risk of irritation and sensitization.

In skincare formulations, essential oils are generally incorporated at relatively low percentages into an appropriate base.

The correct amount depends on several factors:

  • the specific essential oil
  • the intended product
  • whether it is leave-on or rinse-off
  • where on the body it will be applied
  • who will use it
  • the maximum dermal level for that oil and application

There isn't one universal dilution percentage that is appropriate for every essential oil.

Drops vs. Percentages

For casual DIY recipes, you'll often see essential oils measured in drops.

For repeatable formulation, percentages are much more useful.

Drop size can vary depending on the oil's viscosity, dropper, bottle, and temperature.

Weight provides greater consistency.

For example, if you're creating a 100 g formulation at a 1% essential-oil concentration, the essential oil portion would be 1 g.

For a 50 g formulation at the same concentration, it would be 0.5 g.

Working by weight makes it easier to scale a formula while maintaining the intended concentration.

Dilution Percentage Is Not the Same as a Safety Limit

This distinction is important.

You may see general recommendations such as using essential oils at 0.5%, 1%, or 2% in certain types of personal-care products.

Those percentages can be useful formulation starting points.

They do not, however, override the safety limits of an individual essential oil.

A particular oil may have a lower maximum dermal level for a certain application.

So instead of asking only:

"What dilution should I use?"

also ask:

"What is the appropriate maximum for this particular essential oil in this particular type of product?"

IFRA & Essential Oil Safety

When formulating products for others—particularly commercial products—essential-oil safety should be based on more than general dilution charts.

The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) establishes standards and restrictions for fragrance materials based on product category and exposure.

Individual essential oils can contain naturally occurring constituents that are restricted at certain levels.

This means the appropriate maximum concentration can vary depending on whether you're making a:

  • facial product
  • body lotion
  • lip product
  • rinse-off cleanser
  • soap
  • perfume
  • deodorant
  • household product

Supplier documentation and current IFRA guidance should be consulted for the particular essential oil and intended application.

Phototoxicity: Why Some Citrus Oils Need Extra Attention

Citrus essential oils are popular because of their fresh, bright aromas.

But certain citrus oils—particularly some expressed citrus peel oils—can contain compounds associated with phototoxic reactions.

When enough of a phototoxic oil is applied to the skin and the area is subsequently exposed to ultraviolet light, a skin reaction can occur.

Not every citrus essential oil presents the same risk.

Extraction method matters.

The specific oil matters.

The concentration matters.

This is another reason essential oils shouldn't be treated as one interchangeable category.

If you're formulating with citrus oils in a leave-on product, check the safety information for the exact material you're using.

Oxidation Matters, Too

Essential oils don't remain unchanged forever.

Exposure to:

  • oxygen
  • heat
  • light
  • repeated opening

can gradually alter their chemical composition.

Oxidized essential oils may smell different and can present an increased risk of skin sensitization.

Good storage practices therefore matter.

Keep essential oils:

  • tightly sealed
  • away from direct sunlight
  • protected from excessive heat
  • in appropriate containers
  • within the supplier's recommended storage period

A bottle that has been sitting half-empty in a warm, sunny room for years shouldn't automatically be treated like a fresh ingredient.

When Should Essential Oils Be Added?

Essential oils are volatile.

Heat encourages those aromatic compounds to evaporate, which means prolonged heating can change the aroma and composition you're trying to preserve.

In heated formulations such as balms or emulsions, essential oils are therefore commonly incorporated during the cool-down stage, once the formula has cooled sufficiently.

Always consider the heat sensitivity of the specific oil and the requirements of the overall formula.

Essential Oils in Oil-Based Formulations

Essential oils integrate readily into many anhydrous products, including:

  • facial oils
  • body oils
  • balms
  • salves
  • body butters
  • cleansing oils
  • solid perfumes

The essential oil can be blended into the lipid base at an appropriate concentration.

That doesn't mean every essential oil belongs in every oil-based product, however.

A facial oil and a foot balm have very different applications.

The concentration and essential-oil selection should reflect that.

Essential Oils in Water-Based Formulations

This is another common formulation misunderstanding.

Essential oils do not dissolve in water.

Adding several drops of essential oil to a bottle of water and shaking it does not create a properly solubilized product.

The droplets may temporarily disperse when shaken, but they can separate again and come into concentrated contact with the skin.

Water-based sprays, toners, and similar products require an appropriate solubilization system if essential oils are being incorporated.

And because they contain water, they may also require appropriate preservation.

A solubilizer and a preservative perform two different jobs.

One does not replace the other.

Essential Oils Are Not Preservatives

Tea tree.

Lavender.

Oregano.

Clove.

Some essential oils contain constituents with antimicrobial activity.

That does not mean adding them to a water-based cosmetic provides a reliable broad-spectrum preservation system.

Preservation requires protection against the microorganisms relevant to cosmetic contamination throughout the intended life of the product.

Essential oils should therefore not be used as a substitute for an appropriate preservative unless the complete preservation system has been specifically designed and validated for that purpose.

What About Aromatherapy?

Essential oils also have a long history of aromatic use, which is why they frequently appear in products created around sensory experience and ritual.

Lavender can make an evening balm feel completely different from one scented with peppermint.

Vetiver can give a blend an earthy depth.

Citrus can make a product smell fresh and bright.

Frankincense can create a warm, resinous character.

Aroma matters.

It can change how a person experiences a product even when the base formula remains exactly the same.

But aromatherapy and cosmetic formulation are related disciplines—not identical ones.

An oil chosen because you enjoy its aroma still needs to be used at a concentration appropriate for the cosmetic application.

Does Natural Mean Gentle?

Not necessarily.

This may be one of the most important lessons in natural formulation.

Essential oils come from plants, but plant-derived doesn't automatically mean mild, hypoallergenic, or appropriate for everyone.

Essential oils contain biologically active aromatic compounds, and some can irritate or sensitize skin.

Certain oils require particularly careful dilution.

Some aren't appropriate for particular populations or applications.

Natural ingredients deserve the same respect for concentration, chemistry, and safety that we give any other cosmetic ingredient.

Do You Need Essential Oils in Skincare?

No.

And knowing when not to use an ingredient is part of becoming a better formulator.

A facial oil doesn't require an essential oil to be effective.

Neither does a moisturizer, cleanser, balm, or body butter.

Unscented formulations can be beautiful in their simplicity and may be preferable when creating products for people who are sensitive to fragrance.

Essential oils should have a reason for being included.

Perhaps you want a particular aromatic profile.

Perhaps the essential oil contributes characteristics appropriate to your formulation goal.

Or perhaps the best decision is to leave it out.

All three can be thoughtful formulation choices.

Building an Essential Oil Blend

Creating a blend is about more than combining oils that smell pleasant individually.

Essential oils unfold differently within a fragrance composition.

Traditionally, aromatic blends are often described in terms of:

Top notes — lighter, more immediately noticeable aromas that tend to evaporate relatively quickly.

Middle notes — aromas that help form the body or heart of the blend.

Base notes — deeper, longer-lasting aromas that can help anchor the composition.

You don't need to follow rigid perfumery rules to create a beautiful skincare aroma.

But understanding how different oils interact can help you create something that feels intentional rather than simply mixed together.

And once the blend is complete, its total essential-oil concentration still needs to fit safely within the finished formulation.

Start Simple

If you're new to essential oils, resist the urge to begin with a ten-oil blend.

Choose one or two.

Learn their aromas.

Learn their recommended concentrations.

Read their safety information.

Understand how they behave in the type of product you're creating.

Then experiment.

A simple lavender body oil can teach you more about dilution and aroma than a complicated recipe containing eight essential oils measured only in drops.

With experience, blending becomes increasingly intuitive—but the safety calculations should never become guesswork.

Formulating With Respect

Essential oils can bring something remarkable to natural formulation.

Aroma.

Character.

Sensory experience.

And the concentrated complexity of a botanical captured in a very small amount of material.

But concentration deserves respect.

Using essential oils well isn't about using more of them.

It's about knowing the ingredient in your hand.

Understanding its limitations.

Measuring carefully.

Checking its safety information.

And deciding whether it truly belongs in the formula you're creating.

Because natural formulation isn't simply about choosing ingredients from nature.

It's about learning how to work with them responsibly.

Formulate naturally.
Create confidently.
Blend with intention.
